As we approach the holiday season, activities shift up a gear. Especially after last year’s lockdown many families will be planning plenty of get togethers. But it’s been another bruising year emotionally for lots of people. Tiredness - deep tiredness - is affecting many of us.

So within all the loveliness and the sparkle, carve out some quiet moments for contemplative creativity. It boosts batteries and soothes frazzled brains.

My lovely friend @sarahphilpcoaching sends out a brilliant newsletter and one arrived yesterday which suggested making a list of nurturing mini activities to see us out of 2021 and into the new year.
.
I made my list last night and the very act of doing so was soothing. I may not achieve everything but there are some lovely ideas.

In our online Thursday group in October, we looked at ways of building tension within stories. Many of the young people worked on stories for Hallow'een. It was difficult to pick one to highlight but we loved the detail in this short passage from Pip age 11.⁠

This is a part of running Inkpots which is hugely rewarding - on both sides. For me, it's a real privilege to work alongside young people as they work through their feelings and ideas to get to the core of the work they want to develop.⁠

The first step is always a zoom chat with a young person and their parent. It's a chance for getting to know each other a little and to see if it feels like Inkpots will be a good fit.⁠

It’s a dreary, grey day here. The sky is flat and there’s no wind to blow the dullness away. Energy levels feel low.

But it’s the kind of day which is usual here at the back end of the year. It’ll probably be like it for a few days so it’s important to bring a bit our own zing to things.
.
Here’s a few things to help brighten the day:
🍁the lamps will need to be on all day but they add a soft gentleness to things.
🍁the cat likes extra cuddles on days like these, so she sits at my side as I work.
🍁the scent of a beautiful Autumn candle.
🍁lovely food batch cooked at the weekend.
🍁a really good book is on the go.
🍁the tree in the front garden looks spectacular in its Autumn finery.
🍁splendid work to look forward to this week.

One of the constant themes within in our groups is observation - and watching the seasons change, feeling the rhythms of nature helps young people understand about mood and atmosphere too.

This all adds to developing confidence and fluency when building story worlds.

During November, we’re working with all the young people who come to Inkpots on nurturing their creativity. Obviously this depends on their ages, but as the days turn colder and darker it’s sometimes hard to keep up enthusiasm for writing and creativity in general.

But it’s also important to keep the ideas flowing - especially as so many are in exam and assessment cycles that just keep on demanding more and more.

So we’re focusing on smaller bite-size projects which will be brilliant - especially on the days when the weather is dull and dreary.

The workshop is for 9 - 12 year olds and Vashti will be talking about fantasy map-making and story development. Plus we'll have heaps of fun!⁠

Vashti is an award-winning author with Wildspark but she has written many other much-loved books including Brightstorm and we are so thrilled she can be with us this week. We're very lucky.⁠
