When @nicolapenfold visited our @TBHAcademy group last week via Zoom she left us with some golden pieces of writing advice: read your work out loud, allow for gaps in conversations and listen to what your characters say to you. This was a totally inspiring session - thanks again!

One of the most important things we can do to supp

One of the most important things we can do to support young people’s wellbeing is to encourage creativity. At Inkpots, that comes in the form of creative writing - so stories, poems, comics and picture books and stories. Using imaginations to create new worlds and characters - and getting positive feedback and support - all helps build self esteem.
.
This all works towards helping navigate changing times.
.
Our workshops and programmes are designed to support a young person’s wellbeing. In the case of our young teen writers’ programme, we particularly look at a young person’s creative process to help them understand how much their creativity supports them. And, of course, we look at story form and settings, character development and language - all essential parts of story development.
.
This five-week programme has been called ‘inspirational’ by previous students and we start again on Monday 20 July. There are just a few places left; more information is on our website https://inkpots.org/the-inkpots-imagineers-collective/ or the link is also in our bio.

Seeing family members for the first time since the

Seeing family members for the first time since the start of February was just brilliant this weekend. A (very) bracing walk by the beach was just what was called for too.
.
There’s something else in the air as well. After all the challenges of lockdown, now that we’re beginning to come out of it, there’s uncertainty for sure. But there’s also the sense here of the real possibility of doing things differently. I can’t bear the thought of just returning to how we were without seizing the opportunity to rebuild better.
.
So it’s time to break out the box of sharpies and getting creative with the ideas and planning!

It was so great to get feedback like this from our young teen writers' programme in May (for 12 - 14 year olds.⁠
The five weeks went by so quickly and each meeting was a delight. The ideas and stories which the writers produced were original, exciting and a real pleasure to edit and work through with them.⁠
.⁠
This innovative programme offers a combination of small group work and individual support so that the participants thrive in the safe space and feel able to let their imaginations soar.⁠
.⁠
Delighted that the programme will be running again from 20 July - perfect timing for the summer holidays. It offer light-touch support with plenty of resources and inspirations. And a load of fun!⁠

At the moment, we’re putting together a video about what life is currently like for our young creatives. Already we have some beautiful images, artwork and poetry about lockdown.
.
We’re also talking about the language of lockdown - so many words and phrases which are now commonplace including ‘lockdown’ itself:
.
- furlough
- bounce back
- self isolation - ventilator
- face masks
- hand sanitiser - social distancing
- new normal
- stay safe
- strange times
- homeschool
- work from home
- and, of course, unprecedented .
It’s important to remember these things, make a note, keep them safe. This language of lockdown will become part of the stories we write and tell in the future as we look back. For our students, it’s such an important part of their development.

Throughout the day, we shared various prompts to encourage creative activities. In one of these, we asked about the change students would like to see - which causes they felt passionate about.

On Friday, I found out that I had passed the final

On Friday, I found out that I had passed the final assessment to complete a level 2 certificate in understanding children and young people’s mental health. This was something I started before lockdown as I was seeing a number of students with increasing levels of anxiety. I had wanted to ensure I was following the best possible advice in my work with young people. But I would be lying if I said, it’s been a breeze! There have definitely been times in the past three months when I have questioned my timing.⁠
.⁠
However, despite the additional work at a challenging time, I think it’s probably more important than ever that I keep up-to-date with my own training and personal development work. Obviously, any work which help supports young people’s wellbeing is vital. But my own weekly writing classes are proving to be worth their own weight in gold as I get my ideas down onto paper. Inspirational workshops with photographers and artists are also helping to spark my own creativity – and this all filters into the workshops I run at Inkpots. I also continue to read around subjects which are important to us here too.⁠

In the midst of the stress of coming out of lockdown, I have wondered sometimes if this is self indulgent. But it’s akin to putting the oxygen mask on before helping others to put theirs on.⁠

It’s lovely to have some new followers here on Instagram. So, time for a quick intro!⁠
.⁠
I’m Gill and I have been running Inkpots for the past seven and a bit years. I’m an editor and writer, and also a trained youth mentor. I bring my love of books and reading and editorial skills together to run small group workshops and programmes for young people age 10 – 14 years.⁠
.⁠
Those young people help make Inkpots a warm, happy place – and it’s a joy to see our students thrive and develop. We usually are based in our local secondary school, the Burgess Hill Academy in Sussex, where we have our own unique creative space. But the corona virus lockdown has given us the impetus to take our programmes online and so offer support to many more young people and their families.⁠
.⁠
I have worked in primary and secondary schools so have a first-hand knowledge of the importance of a positive transition from primary to secondary school. This year, I am delighted to be offering some webinars in June to help support parents of Year 6s with practical and creative ideas for the next few months. More information will be available next week.⁠

Tomorrow our new online writing course for young w

Tomorrow our new online writing course for young writers starts. It’s something which has been in the pipeline for a while, but the lock down escalated the process.
.
The programme is for a small group of students so that they can get as much support as needed. But also benefitting from being with peers and sharing their work, ideas and inspirations too.
.

Just reflecting on the past week and feeling incre

Just reflecting on the past week and feeling incredibly proud of our Inkpots community. Students have started a new school term amidst great uncertainty but have got right down to doing their work again. And parents continue to do amazing jobs of supporting them as well as juggling a myriad of other demands.
Grateful, too, that we’re able to keep connected. The tech is getting easier and we’re finding a flow which means we’re supporting students and inspiring them to express themselves creatively.
