Do you have any winter rituals? I have December books I always turn to - @katherinemay_ ‘s Winter and @nigelslater ‘s Christmas Chronicles. At Inkpots, we’re fully into hot chocolate and ear muffs time. Plus we need some good blankets we’ve decided.

This week sees the end of my mentoring programmes

This week sees the end of my mentoring programmes in school and on-line. That doesn’t mean that the mentoring stops - just that it’s the end of this cycle.

It marks an opportunity for us all to pause and reflect. And celebrate.

Every young person I’ve worked with has taken steps forward; some are huge, others are smaller, all of them are brave.

A crucial part of my process is to gather feedback from the students. We’ll be having conversations and asking for written comments so that the students’ voices are reflected fully in the planning for next term.

As we enter into December, Christmas planning and activities begin in earnest. In our groups, there’s are a LOT of talk about panto rehearsals and prep for end of term concerts. But it’s also the darkest time of year. And it’s turned really cold here.

So while all the activities are fun, they’re not for everyone. The desire to withdraw for a while may be very strong.

Remember to do the things which you love, which anchor you. Find your own light before the year turns again.

I’m Gill - a mentor working with young people. I

I’m Gill - a mentor working with young people. I work in a school delivering a programme specifically for 13/14 year olds. In addition, I have designed and now deliver a peer mentoring programme where some wonderful older students support younger students who worry about being at a bigger school. I also run private on-line mentoring sessions as well as offering training for those working with teenagers. We have a brilliant community of young people too who come to drop-in groups.

This photo is me in school mode (hence the lanyard). It was taken as part of the preparation for a photo session for our peer mentors. This was a way of saying thank you to them but also taking part in such a project helped develop team working, organisational skills, as well as being a huge confidence boost.

In order to deliver the very best service to students, their families and their teachers, it’s important for me to have people around Inkpots who I trust implicitly. I notice that when I’m with members of ‘the team’ my body is at ease but my mind fizzes with ideas.

Others people include @saorsapsychology @coppermothdesign @emmaflin_86 and @writebackuk

This is something I also ask my students to consider. Who do they have in their support circles who they can really, really trust. Who are their cheerleaders?

We all need this kind of support. We don’t always have to be always in complete agreement - I am often challenged and stretched by some of the conversations I have. But it is important to know others have our best interests at heart.

So when Jenny said hop on that table and look out the window while I check the light, it was easy to trust her implicitly and do just that. And the result is a snapshot of me in one of my happy places.

This photo was taken in one of ‘those’ moments. A perfect Autumn morning. Quiet streets. A shaft of sunlight. The gentle click of the bike wheels.

As we get into the run up to Christmas, those moments can be few and far between. We’re also into that part of the school term when the holidays seem a long way off yet.

But there are glimmers of hope if we look carefully. One of the things I’m talking with my students about this week is to find one thing in the day which makes them feel warm inside. It can be the smallest of things - someone’s smile, a kind word, a pet.

Wishing you a day with more than one glimmer.

There’s even a breathing technique using the sense of comfort associated with a mug of hot chocolate:

🤎 Hold your hands out as if you are holding a lovely mug of delicious hot choc.
🤎 Breathe in slowly as if you are taking in the delicious aroma.
🤎 Let your breath out gently as if you are blowing on the hot chocolate to cool it down.
🤎 Repeat and relax.

We’re based in Sussex win the bit which has a history of Bonfire Societies and the celebrations culminate in Lewes on Sunday with the biggest bonfire of all. Our town has its Bonfire Procession in September so we get double celebrations!

Over the past few months, some of our students and I have been working on some handouts to support teenagers when life gets a bit sticky. The subjects covered come up time and time again in mentoring sessions:
