At Inkpots, we first heard about Abi Elphinstone’s books last year and followed the progress of Sky Song on social media. So, it was really exciting to get a copy to review a few weeks ago – and then we were lucky enough to meet Abi at a book signing too.
I finished reading Sky Song a few days ago and it is one of the best books I have read in a long time.
The first thing to say is that the cover is beautiful and really does give the reader a taste of what the book is about – the polar bear and icebergs, plus the three small figures prepare you for this story about a snow world and all the dangers and adventures there. The cover also feels lovely to touch – so it feels like a treat straight away.
The second thing is that Sky Song is a wonderful adventure story. It is all about Eska, who has been kidnapped by the Ice Queen because she wants to steal her voice as the final act in her cruel plan to dominate the snowy kingdom of Erkenwald.
Eska manages to escape but then must work out how she can stop the Ice Queen’s evil plans. Along the way, she meets an eagle, a boy called Flint and his sister Blu, and their fox pup. Together they are a brave, formidable team. Their adventures and challenges are awesome – and there are lots of moments when you just have to hold your breathe but keep on reading.
One of the things that I really loved about this book is that it also is about how important friendship is and belonging to a group or ‘tribe’. It is also beautifully written, and I got completely swept up in the story of bravery and friendship.
Thanks so much to Simon and Schuster Children’s Books for sending us a copy to review too.
