Set in the glittering world of opera in the 1870s, this book takes the reader on a thrilling adventure involving a theatre rat called Celeste, a crystal chandelier, a man in an emerald green suit and a dangerous game called The Reckoning.
This is a haunting book and the story of Celeste and what had happened to her stayed with me for days. There is an exquisite attention to detail and I was totally captivated by the behind-the-scenes stories and the characters which were interwoven. Sally Gardner’s own experience of working at the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen as a young costume designer leaves its mark on this book – there’s a richness here which makes the reader feel as if you only have to reach out and touch the beautiful fabrics and be dazzled by Copenhagen at Christmas.
Celeste’s story is a complex one and we have to pay attention to the twists and turns. She is treated as being at the bottom of the rung as a theatre rat, but Celeste knows that is not her true story. It’s only after a horrific accident with the glass chandelier in the opera house where she lives and works, that she meets the mysterious man in the green suit and is introduced to the game of The Reckoning.
Celeste must fight to discover the truth and rescue her own twin sister and her parents as well as others involved in a sea-faring mystery. This would be perfect for Christmas reading – and we think it would appeal to 9 – 11 year olds.
